My family moved to West Des Moines, Iowa from the Peoria, Illinois area back in 2001. Many of the local attractions were places that even my wife and I had never visited. Each summer, typically on my son's birthday in June, we take a family trip to a local spot. Many times its something right within Des Moines, other times we travel to other locations within Iowa.

Many of the tours are relatively simple, such as:

* Visit the top of 801 Grand Ave to check out the view from the tallest building in Des Moines.

* Walk the Des Moines downtown sky walk system to explore the routes, shopping, and food.

* Tour the Iowa State Capital

Some of the places we'd like to visit next: Tone's Spice Factory in Ankeny, Barilla in Ames, the fossil collecting park in Rockwell.

Here's a quick recap of some of the places we've visited...

Fenelon is the worlds shortest, steepest railway taking passengers from 4th street to Fenelon Place for a fantastic view of the Mississippi River Valley.

Looking down the railway as the car takes you back down to 4th street.

  2. I am very happy to read this. This is the kind of manual that needs to be given and not the random misinformation that’s at the other blogs. Appreciate your sharing this best doc.
