My family moved to West Des Moines, Iowa from the Peoria, Illinois area back in 2001. Many of the local attractions were places that even my wife and I had never visited. Each summer, typically on my son's birthday in June, we take a family trip to a local spot. Many times its something right within Des Moines, other times we travel to other locations within Iowa.

Many of the tours are relatively simple, such as:

* Visit the top of 801 Grand Ave to check out the view from the tallest building in Des Moines.

* Walk the Des Moines downtown sky walk system to explore the routes, shopping, and food.

* Tour the Iowa State Capital

Some of the places we'd like to visit next: Tone's Spice Factory in Ankeny, Barilla in Ames, the fossil collecting park in Rockwell.

I have to admit that our family is NOT "religious" about the fair - we don't go every year, but if you want to live here you need to experience the fair.  Some of our favorites are the Pioneer Play Farm for kids and visiting the pigs!!
