My family moved to West Des Moines, Iowa from the Peoria, Illinois area back in 2001. Many of the local attractions were places that even my wife and I had never visited. Each summer, typically on my son's birthday in June, we take a family trip to a local spot. Many times its something right within Des Moines, other times we travel to other locations within Iowa.

Many of the tours are relatively simple, such as:

* Visit the top of 801 Grand Ave to check out the view from the tallest building in Des Moines.

* Walk the Des Moines downtown sky walk system to explore the routes, shopping, and food.

* Tour the Iowa State Capital

Some of the places we'd like to visit next: Tone's Spice Factory in Ankeny, Barilla in Ames, the fossil collecting park in Rockwell.

Here's a quick recap of some of the places we've visited...

Pick sweet corn from the field!!

We wouldn't be able to certify our family as "native Iowans" unless we took our kids out to a friends farm near Mitchellville and had them pick their own sweet corn directly from the field.  Wil was also told that he had to each raw field corn as well - just so that he would know the difference!!
