My family moved to West Des Moines, Iowa from the Peoria, Illinois area back in 2001. Many of the local attractions were places that even my wife and I had never visited. Each summer, typically on my son's birthday in June, we take a family trip to a local spot. Many times its something right within Des Moines, other times we travel to other locations within Iowa.

Many of the tours are relatively simple, such as:

* Visit the top of 801 Grand Ave to check out the view from the tallest building in Des Moines.

* Walk the Des Moines downtown sky walk system to explore the routes, shopping, and food.

* Tour the Iowa State Capital

Some of the places we'd like to visit next: Tone's Spice Factory in Ankeny, Barilla in Ames, the fossil collecting park in Rockwell.

Here's a quick recap of some of the places we've visited...

Science Center of Iowa

Science Center of Iowa
Des Moines, Iowa

Our favorites are the IMAX theatre and the planetarium (ok, Dad's favorite anyway).  In fact, Wil and Carrie visited the Science Center on the 2nd day the center was opened.  When you enter, you get one of those wrist bands that are hard to get off...  and Wil turned it into an experiment.  He left the band on to see how long it would last.  Of course, Mom thought this would last only a few days before he'd get tired of it and cut it off.  But sure enough, it made to 1 month, then 6 months, and he kept going.  He even took pictures of it a regular intervals.  The band almost made it to one full year, as it fell off at 360 days.

The entrance band from the Science Center after 30 days.
